How to Install the Latest Version of SMPlayer in Ubuntu ?

SMPlayer‘ is perhaps one of the best graphical front-ends that was ever created for the extremely powerful, command-line based, open-source media player known as ‘MPLayer‘.

From adjusting the audio/video synchronizations to adding various filters to enhance the audio/video quality, equalizers, viewing advanced codec information, searching for subtitles using online sources, playing both local & online multimedia content… it has tons and tons of options, and in the hands of a real geek, it can become a lethal weapon ;-).

Although ‘SMPlayer’ is created using ‘Qt’ (a graphical user interface building framework, also being used to create the KDE desktop), if you use Ubuntu, it can still imitate the look and feel of the GTK (another GUI builder, also used by Gnome desktop) applications nevertheless.

If you are a hardcore ‘Gnome geek’ :), then you might also notice that there are few subtle changes in the interface that don’t really ‘align’ with the Gnome UI implementations as well.

Anyway, recent versions of ‘SMPlayer’ now also comes with a new standalone application called ‘SMTube’ that lets you play & even download YouTube videos. And the main interface now also supports skins that change the overall look and feel dramatically.

Few of SMPlayer’s features …

*. Has the ability to play almost all the popular codecs thanks to ‘MPLayer’ and ‘ffmpeg‘.

*. Play both local and online (streaming) multimedia content.

*. Change audio sync settings.

*. Rotate, flip, mirror-image, deinterlace, change aspect ration, add filters, zoom in/out, gain volume, load external audio track, change audio channel settings etc.

*. Load subtitles (locally or search online), change subtitle font related settings and delay subtitles.

*. Watch DVDs with menu.

*. Has a built-in playlist.

*. Browse and download YouTube videos.

*. Get advanced codec information.

*. Add/remove toolbars from the main interface.

*. Tweak a lot of other settings through the ‘Preferences’ window … are just a few to mention.

If interested, thanks to a PPA, you can install the latest version of SMPlayer in Ubuntu 12.10 Quental Quetzal, 12.04, 11.10, 11.04, 10.10, 10.04 etc by using the below commands in your Terminal window.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:rvm/smplayer

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install smplayer

This will also install the ‘SMPlayer’ skins, themes and the YouTube browser ‘SMTube’ as well.

Once the installation completes, you can launch it by searching on the Dash for ‘smplayer’. As mentioned above, the ‘SMTube’ can also be launched separately too. Good luck.

A note about using ‘SMTube’ …

As far as I know, YouTube allows you to play their videos locally (using desktop based applications). However, downloading a YouTube video is strictly prohibited, unless the author (owner) of that video gives that permission. So please remember that.
