Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) LTS has been released few hours ago. Although I don’t usually use any upcoming versions of Ubuntu (sticking with the 11.10) but since I have an Intel Sandy Bridge based processor and 12.04 comes RC6 (advanced power saving feature for Sandy Bridge micro-architecture) enabled by default and according to tests, it saves a considerable amount of energy, I’m bit tempted to give it a go this time :).
Anyhow, according to the release page, the 12.04 LTS Beta 1 comes with few new features such as:
*. HUD (a new way of accessing menu’s).
*. Rhythmbox is the new music manager, replacing the previous one, Banshee. I like this move, because Banshee is written using the Mono framework, and requires somewhat heavy system resources to run.
*. Comes with LibreOffice 3.5 Beta 2.
*. Application launcher with multi-monitor support.
*. Enable/Disable Zeitgeist monitoring using the “System Settings” section … these are again juts a few new features.
Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu have also upgraded to the Beta 1 with numerous new features (Calligra Office suite available in Kubuntu, Amarok MP3 integration with Gpodder, new wallpaper in Xubuntu etc) too.
Unlike with the Alpha releases, starting with the Beta 1, the downloadable ISO disk images are about 702MB in size, so they’ll fit into a standard sized (700MB) CDs as well.
If interested, you can download the Beta 1 release disk images from this official page. Good luck.
