dnFileEncryptor: .NET Based Portable Data Encryption tool for Windows

“dnFileEncryptor” is an extremely simple, GNU GPL v3 licensed (open-source) tool for encrypting and decrypting files under the MS Windows platform. The program is written using the Microsoft dot net framework, and supports three encryption algorithms (AES, DES and TripleDES) for encrypting your data.

And unlike with many other powerful tool such as Truecrypt or AxCrypt, with “dnFileEncryptor” you won’t get a lot of features. However, it comes with a zipped archive. So you can extract the content and use it as a portable file encryptor if you like (as long as the PC at the other end has .NET installed, not sure about the required .NET version though).

Main features …

*. Does not support drag-n-drop, so you’ll have to use the browse button for loading files.

*. Encrypt and Decrypt files.

*. Easily change between the algorithms.

*. Does not support using a “keyfile”, only using passwords are supported (which is not a big deal because for most users using a powerful password is more than enough). Also displays whether the input password in too weak or moderate etc (depending on the length, characters and so on).

*. It has a Windows Explorer Shell integration option (through the “Settings” window), however when I tried to enable it, the program crashed.

While encrypting, it adds the “.enc” extension to the output file (just after the file’s actual extension). But this extension (.enc) is not automatically removed when decrypting. So let’s say that you encrypted a MP3 file, and then later decrypted it.

But you won’t be able to open it automatically using the default app for that extension by simply double clicking on it, because it still has the “.enc” extension attached to it (although it’s completely decrypted).

But as a simple fix, while decrypting, when it asks where to save the file, make sure to manually remove the “.enc” extension (just select that part and press the “Delete” or “Backspace” keys on your Keyboard).

Whether it’s a text file, video etc … just remove the “.enc” extension before decrypting, and everything should be fine 🙂 …

After that, the output file should have its original extension (plus program associations should also be restored automatically as well).
